My philosophy of woodturning is deeply rooted in the principles of kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. I see every piece of wood not just for its grain or potential shape, but for its story — including its flaws, cracks, and imperfections. Rather than hiding these so-called “defects,” I choose to honor them, sometimes even highlighting them with resin, metal powders, or other materials that reflect the spirit of kintsugi. Just as kintsugi transforms broken ceramics into something even more beautiful, I believe the true soul of a turned piece often lies in the places where it’s been tested, where nature or time has left its mark.
